How to book domestic flights in Indonesia from abroad

Published ByMari LiveaboardKomodoSumbawaRaja AmpatBanda SeaTriton Bay

Booking flights in Indonesia from abroad with a foreign credit card is harder than it should be. Most Indonesian online travel agents reject cards issued abroad at the payment step, and so do most of the airlines themselves, often with no useful error message. This guide explains why, which airports and airlines serve the Mari liveaboard cruise ports, which carriers to choose or avoid, and the safest way to book from overseas.

Quick answer: how to book flights in Indonesia from abroad

Book your domestic flights through Traveloka.com rather than directly with the airline, and choose any airline over Lion Air when you have a choice.

  • Many Indonesian booking sites and airline websites decline credit cards issued abroad.
  • Traveloka.com is the one Indonesian booking platform we trust that accepts foreign credit cards.
  • Booking directly with an airline is risky, because schedule changes are often announced only by WhatsApp or SMS.
  • Choose Garuda Indonesia (extra 23kg for diving gear), Batik Air or Citilink over Lion Air.
  • Arrive in your embarkation city at least one day before your cruise starts.
  • Mari liveaboard can advise guests who booked directly with us or through one of our official agents.

Why foreign credit cards are declined in Indonesia

Most Indonesian online travel agents block payments from credit cards issued abroad, and so do most airlines on their own websites. These sites are built around local payment methods such as bank transfers, virtual accounts, e-wallets and QRIS. A foreign card often fails at the very last step, with a vague "payment failed" message or a verification code that never arrives.

The usual causes are:

  • Anti-fraud filters that reject cards issued outside Indonesia
  • Verification codes sent by SMS to a phone that is switched off or has no roaming
  • Payment gateways set up for domestic cards only
  • Booking forms that ask for an Indonesian phone number or ID

If your card is declined once or twice, stop trying. Repeated attempts can make your bank block the card as suspected fraud. Use a platform that accepts foreign cards instead, as explained below.

Where Mari cruises start and end, and which airlines fly there

Mari cruises start and end in eight ports across five destinations: Komodo, Sumbawa, Raja Ampat, the Banda Sea and Triton Bay. Most guests fly into Bali or Jakarta from overseas, then take one domestic flight to their embarkation city.

Location (airport code)Mari cruisesAirlines that serve it
Bali (DPS)Bali to Labuan Bajo and Bali to Maumere, and reverseGaruda Indonesia, Citilink, Batik Air, Lion Air, Super Air Jet and many international airlines
Labuan Bajo (LBJ)Komodo, whale shark and Bali routesGaruda Indonesia, Citilink, Batik Air, Lion Air, Wings Air, plus AirAsia and Jetstar Asia on some international routes
Sumbawa Besar (SWQ)Sumbawa, Komodo and whale shark routesWings Air from Bali and Lombok
Maumere (MOF)Bali to Maumere and Ambon to Maumere, and reverseWings Air and NAM Air, via Kupang, Labuan Bajo or Makassar

Saumlaki (SXK)Forgotten Islands routesWings Air from Ambon
Kaimana (KNG)Triton Bay routesWings Air from Sorong, plus a few regional flights

This table is a starting point, not a timetable. Routes and airlines change often, especially to Sumbawa Besar, Maumere, Saumlaki and Kaimana, where flights are few and sometimes operate only a few days a week. Check current schedules on Traveloka and confirm your cruise's exact embarkation port and time in your booking confirmation.

Which airlines to choose, and which to avoid

Garuda Indonesia and Batik Air are both very good, and Garuda is our first choice for divers. Citilink is a solid third, and Lion Air is a last resort. This is our own view, based on what our guests and crew have experienced on these routes.

Garuda Indonesia

The national carrier and our first choice for divers. Garuda treats diving gear as sports equipment, so travelers who declare diving equipment in their luggage get an extra 23kg (51lb) on top of the usual 20kg (44lb). That is very convenient for divers and underwater photographers. Fares are higher, but schedules hold and disruptions are handled properly. Tell Garuda you are carrying diving equipment when you check in, and confirm the allowance for your fare before you fly.

Batik Air

Batik Air belongs to the same group as Lion Air but operates as a full-service airline, and in our experience it is very good. It is an excellent alternative when Garuda is sold out or too expensive.

Citilink

Garuda's low-cost sister airline. A solid third choice on the busy Bali, Labuan Bajo and Jakarta routes, with fewer surprises than the budget airlines.

Super Air Jet

A newer budget airline. It works for short hops when you leave generous time around the flight, but we would not rely on it for a connection that leads to your cruise.

Wings Air and NAM Air

These regional carriers fly the small turboprops that serve Sumbawa Besar, Maumere, Saumlaki and Kaimana. On several of those routes there is no alternative, so there is no choice to make. Book through Traveloka, check the schedule again one week and 48 hours before departure, and add a buffer day.

Lion Air

Whenever Lion Air and another airline fly the same route, pick the other airline, even if it costs more.

In our experience, Lion Air offers a wide range of departure times, but some of those flights are later cancelled or merged into other departures shortly before the date, sometimes without telling the passenger. The generous choice of times looks convenient, yet the time you pick may never operate. For a guest with a fixed cruise departure, that risk is not worth the saving.

Why you should not book directly with the airline

We strongly recommend that you do not buy your domestic flights directly from the airline, because the chance of not being told about a change is high. When an airline reschedules or cancels a flight, the best case is a message by WhatsApp or SMS to the number you entered at booking. If you are traveling and have no local SIM, no roaming or no access to your messages, you will not see it.

What can go wrong:

  • You arrive at the airport for a flight that has been moved or cancelled
  • You miss the connection to your cruise, and the boat cannot wait
  • You have to rebook at the last minute, at a much higher fare
  • You deal with customer service in a time zone and language that are not yours

Because a cruise starts on a fixed date, one missed flight can mean a missed embarkation. Book through a platform or an agent who tracks your booking and tells you early. We recommend Traveloka and VIFA.

Traveloka: the booking platform we recommend

Traveloka.com is the only online travel agent in Indonesia that we consider reliable, and the only one we know that accepts credit cards issued abroad. It takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express, works in English and shows prices in your own currency.

How to book:

  1. Open Traveloka.com or the app and choose English and your currency.
  2. Search by airport name and your travel date.
  3. Compare the airlines and choose one from the list above.
  4. Enter each traveler's name exactly as it appears in the passport.
  5. Pay with your credit card and approve the payment in your banking app or by the code your bank sends.
  6. Save the e-ticket from your email and keep a copy in the app.

The main advantage comes after booking. Rescheduling and cancellation are easy on Traveloka and can be done online in less than 20 minutes. Any fee follows the airline's fare rules, but you stay in control instead of waiting for a message from the airline. Use an email address you check every day and turn on app notifications.

VIFA: a local travel agent who acts for you

If you prefer a person to a website, VIFA is a very good travel agent in Indonesia. They speak good English, tell you immediately if a flight is cancelled or rescheduled, and take action straight away to rebook you.

VIFA suits guests with several flights, tight connections or a cruise that depends on one key flight. Send them your cruise dates and your arrival flight, and ask for options on airlines other than Lion Air.

How Mari liveaboard can help with your flights

Mari can assist and advise guests who booked directly with us and guests who booked through one of our official agents. We can suggest the best airport and flight times for your cruise and check that your connections leave enough margin.

More tips for booking flights in Indonesia

  • Arrive early. Be in your embarkation city at least one day before the cruise starts. A delay then costs you a day of rest, not a day of diving.
  • Plan for dive gear. Domestic fares often include a small checked bag, commonly 15 to 20kg (33 to 44lb). On Garuda Indonesia, declare your diving equipment to get an extra 23kg (51lb) of sports equipment allowance. On other airlines, add extra baggage when you book, as it costs more at the airport.
  • Match the passport. Names on the ticket must match your passport exactly.
  • Check again. Look at your booking one week and 48 hours before each flight.
  • Stay reachable. Keep a local eSIM or roaming active so you can see airline and Traveloka messages.
  • Insure the trip. Choose travel insurance that covers delays and missed departures.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my credit card declined on Indonesian airline websites?

Most Indonesian airline and travel sites are set up for local payment methods and reject many cards issued abroad. Stop after one or two tries and book through Traveloka instead.

Can I book Indonesian domestic flights with a foreign credit card?

Yes. Traveloka.com accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express, and it is the only Indonesian booking platform we know that does so reliably.

Which Indonesian airline should I avoid?

We recommend choosing another airline over Lion Air whenever there is a choice. In our experience its schedules include flights that are cancelled shortly before departure, sometimes without notifying the passenger.

Should I book with the airline or through Traveloka?

Through Traveloka or a travel agent such as VIFA. Direct bookings depend on a WhatsApp or SMS message reaching you, and that can fail while you travel.

How early should I arrive before my cruise?

At least one day before the cruise starts. Your cruise confirmation lists the embarkation port and time.

What should I do if my flight is cancelled or rescheduled?

Change it at once, online on Traveloka or through VIFA, then email Mari so we can adjust your transfer.

Does Mari liveaboard book flights for guests?

We advise rather than book. We can help guests who booked directly or through an official agent choose airports, times and airlines.
