The Story of Mari: Built from Tradition. Guided by purpose.

A South Sulawesi phinisi with a long history at sea, now owned and operated by a team focused on serious diving in Indonesia.

Our Story

A traditional Indonesian phinisi with diving at its heart

Where Mari’s story began

Built in 2008 by the phinisi boat builders of South Sulawesi, Mari represents generations of knowledge, carried through timber, proportion and craft. Constructed from ironwood and teak, she belongs to a living Indonesian maritime tradition shaped by long passages through the archipelago.

Mari with her sails up

Her history gives Mari character, but it does not define the experience alone. Today, that traditional foundation supports a clear purpose: to take serious divers into Indonesia’s remarkable waters with capable operations, personal service and the freedom of a small vessel.

Why Mari Liveaboard exists

Mari liveaboard was shaped around a simple idea. A premium diving journey should invest in what matters on the water, without unnecessary spectacle.

That means an experienced dive team, a maximum of 14 guests and a crew large enough to keep service attentive throughout the voyage. It means space to prepare properly, recover between dives and watch the islands pass at the pace of the boat. Everything has a role, from the way the dive operation moves to the quiet rhythm of life on deck.

The result is not an attempt to be an ultra-luxury resort at sea. It is something more focused: a traditional phinisi liveaboard for serious divers, offering premium comfort and exceptional value.

Looking ahead

Mari’s next chapter is grounded in the same qualities that have carried her this far: Indonesian craftsmanship, capable seamen and dive staff, and a respect for the waters she travels through.

The aim is measured rather than grand. To run thoughtful voyages, care for the boat and give divers the time, support and space to experience Indonesia properly.

Top value for money

We took an 11 day trip to Misool and Dampier. The crew and dive guides led by Ungke were very friendly and absolutely went out of their way to find the best sites for our group's interests, from mantas to muck diving. Food was fantastic, cabins were comfortable, and the whole trip felt like incredible value for what we experienced. Would book with Mari again in a heartbeat.

Best crew ever for an amazing dive adventure

Very knowledgeable dive guides for all the different dive sites, with time for photo enthusiasts to get the shots they wanted without holding up the group. Briefings were thorough and the whole crew felt like family by the end of the trip. Highly recommend for anyone serious about their diving.

Superb Komodo Cruise

The dives were all more incredible than the last. The boat is in very good condition; nothing is missing. The crew is really attentive and clearly passionate about diving themselves, which made every briefing exciting. Meals were varied and delicious, and the itinerary hit all the highlights Komodo is famous for. Can't wait to sail with them again.

Everything was just perfect

The staff was amazing, very professional and concerned about diving safety. The boat has all the dive amenities you could ask for, and the cabins were spotless and comfortable after long dive days. Every detail felt thought through, from the dive briefings to the food. This trip exceeded all my expectations.
